A Checklist for Developing Your MBA Short-Term Goals

Your short-term career goals are the cornerstone of your entire MBA application, so you need to give them deep and thorough consideration. The following questions should help you with that process.

  • What industry are you targeting? Why now?

  • What geographic region are you targeting?

  • What 2-3 companies within that industry would you like to work for?

  • What will be your role and job title?

  • What opportunities/threats do you see in your target industry? What is your action plan for succeeding in your desired industry/company? How will you define/measure success in your desired industry/company? How will you improve how your target industry/company operates?

  • How do your short-term goals relate to your professional experience?

  • What do your goals mean to you personally?

  • If your short-term goals are entrepreneurial, then please consider: what critical needs will your business fill? Who would be your nearest competitors? What will you do better than them?

Now, having considered all the above, try to summarize your short-term goals in one sentence. You won’t be able to fit everything, but you’ll be surprised at how much you can include in what should ideally read like an inspiring and tailored mission statement.
